Total Recall
| Published: 24th September 2008 14:45 |
An uncontrolled dog can cause any amount of problems, running off and risking being hit by cars, escaping, damaging your home, biting, chasing other people's dogs, joggers, barking, fighting with other dogs to name but a few.
We need to train our dogs to behave both on and off the lead and the most important is the recall.
From an early age your dog should be trained to come when called, next is to stay remaining in either the sit or down position until released on command by you. Given time and patience the dog should be confident enough to stay even if the handler is not in sight ignoring distrations that may tempt them to move.
The dog should walk at heel right or left of the handler level with the leg not out in front pulling or leading the handler straining on the leash.
The dog should also leave on command anything you want it to, pick up, come away from other dogs etc.
If we all train our dogs to the six simple commands of sit-down-come-stay-heel and leave what well behaved dogs we would have!
