The Cans

Published: 22nd July 2008 17:07

The Cans

Formed in April of 2006, The Cans are a Stockport based, four piece rhythm and blues, rock n' roll band.

The CansThe band play a mix of covers and their own material. Covers range from classic blues tracks such as 'Help Me' and 'Don't Start Me Talkin' by Sonny Boy Williamson and 'Cocaine' by JJ Cale (also covered by Eric Clapton), to 50's and 60's rock n' roll songs such as 'Mystery Train' by Elvis Presley and 'You Really Got Me' by The Kinks.

The original lineup consisted of front man Steve Mullen on lead vocals, harmonica and rhythm guitar; Andy Millington, lead and slide guitars and vocals; Nolan Worthington, bass guitar and Chris Pendlebury on drums. The band's name is an acronym of the members names, Chris, Andy, Nolan, Steve = CANS.

The Cans made their stage debut on Friday, May 5th 2006 at the Manchester Rugby Club in Cheadle Hulme. The band played to an audience of around 150 blues enthusiasts. The night was a complete success and the band began a monthly residency at the club. In later gigs The Cans opened up a jam session in their second set to any musician in the audience. Local musicians such as Bill Worthington and Barry Lord from Atlanta Roots regularly got up and joined in. The following months saw The Cans receive numerous bookings at other local pubs in the Stockport and Cheadle area.

In May 2007, Chris left the band due to gigging commitments with the many Jazz bands he regularly deps for. Chris was replaced by Mark Hardwick, drummer with another Stockport based band, Shaky Dog. Mark had previously gigged with Andy and Nolan as a three piece under the name of Red House Blues so was familiar with their playing style and was instantly at home as a member of The Cans.

Mark later had to leave The Cans in August due to heavy work commitments running his new business Black Rose Drums. The band used several dep drummers over the next few months such as the legendary Timmy Franks (The Jack Bruce Band) before welcoming back original drummer Chris Pendlebury.

In October 2007 The Cans went into the studio to start recording material for their up and coming album 'Rythym & Booze'. They plan on returning in the new year to complete several more tracks.
